When is it time to seek help?
The following are general guidelines as to when one should seek the help of a fertility specialist. However, each case needs to be considered individually and the guidelines may change after taking into account one’s specific circumstances.
If you are under 35 years old, have no prior medical or surgical history, and have been trying to conceive for 9 months to 1 year, it is time to begin an investigation. This can be done with either your ob/gyn, or an infertility specialist.
If you are under 35 years old and either you or your partner have a previous medical history that might affect your fertility, then you should begin the investigation after trying to conceive for 6 months without success (or sooner if you know there is a condition that is directly affecting your fertility.)   For the female partner, the relevant medical conditions include prior ruptured appendicitis, sexual transmitted diseases,  pelvic surgery, endometriosis, irregular periods, or very heavy or painful periods. For the male partner the relevant medical conditions include prior testicular surgery, mumps orchitis, testicular trauma, or difficulty with erections or ejaculation.
If you are between 35 and 42 years old and have been unsuccessful at conceiving for more than 6 months, then it is time to seek medical help. If you or your partner have any of the aforementioned medical conditions, you should seek help even sooner.
If you are over 42 and have not conceived after a couple of months of well timed intercourse, you should seek medical help.
For women of any age who have not yet tried to conceive and would like to use donor sperm for artificial inseminations, we would be happy to assist you in this endeavor.
